Drinking and Art

History’s great artists have all known the secret to producing classic works: become inspired by the freeing effects of alcohol. Here’s how a few different drinks can inspire your inner artist:

Wine: A leisurely sipped glass of wine was a favorite tool of Michelangelo, who used it to refresh himself in between shouting at a block of marble until it turned into a statue. Drinking wine can inspire painting-worthy visions of pastoral fields, gentle streams, and murderous swarms of enlarged bees blotting out the sun in order to influence the price of grain.

Beer: A cold beer will make you want to put pen to paper and begin writing the great American novel. Here’s a tip: Write the story of a protagonist who’s basically just like yourself, but with a tragic backstory that redeems his or her flaws. Writing it on an antique typewriter is just as rewarding as writing something good.

Scotch: Pair a smooth scotch with some paints, a pre-stretched canvas covered with liquid white, and some Joy of Painting DVDs in order to create a soothing nature scene and to fondly remember your youth, when you were strangely jealous of Bob Ross’s hair.

“Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name

Grace, it’s the name for a girl
It’s also a thought that changed the world
And when she walks on the street
You can hear the strings
Grace finds goodness in everything

Grace, she’s got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She’s got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma
She travels outside of karma
When she goes to work
You can hear her strings
Grace finds beauty in everything

Grace, she carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace makes beauty out of ugly things.”

Grace, U2

Something changed inside me: broke wide open, all spilled out
Till I had no doubt that something changed.

Never would have believed it till I felt it in my own heart:
In the deepest part the healing came.

And I cannot make it
And I cannot fake it
And I can’t afford it
But it’s mine.

– “Something Changed,” by Sara Groves, as quoted in “Angry Conversations with God: A Snarky But Authentic Spiritual Memoir” by Susan E. Isaacs. Haven’t heard the song, but I loved the words. And the book is kickin.

I’m sitting at the front desk in a counseling office, reading a book about freedom from overeating, and finding that it says a lot about women in general, whether they cope with food or not. One sentence brought unexpected tears to my eyes as I thought about all the people I’ve been given to “love and be loved by.” So I’m having an estrogen moment, what of it?

“I have met a great many women who so long for a ‘certain someone’ or for their certain someone to act in a particular way that they do not even see all the special people God has placed in their lives for them to love and be loved by.”

I love an author called Thomas Kelly. But just now I want to post a quote not of his, but of something said of him when he died in 1941:

“I was filled with a kind of joy when I read of Thomas Kelly…I feel I want to sing when I hear of such men emerging. I know it is an outward loss to us–though even directly we may gain more than we lose by their joining the more active side of the communion of saints–but I keep on feeling what it must be…to be able to push aside this fussy veil of the body and look unblinking at the Light…”
